Freedom of Choice Ohio and the National Council of Jewish Women, Columbus Section hosted the 2012 Roe v. Wade anniversary event on January 24th.
Activists, volunteers, health center staff, administrators, and some of our favorite current and former legislators gathered at the Gateway Theater to remember and celebrate the landmark court case and the freedoms we continuously fight to protect.
This year's event was a screening of When Abortion Was Illegal: Untold Stories. This Academy Award-nominated film features compelling first person accounts which reveal the physical, legal, and emotional consequences during the era when abortion was a criminal act. Remembrances include those of women who experienced illegal abortions, doctors who risked imprisonment and loss of their licenses for providing illegal abortions, and individuals who broke the law by helping women find safe abortions.
After the film, FOCO honored Dr. Harley Blank for his three decades of work as an abortion provider in Columbus. Dr. Blank was presented with the lifetime achievement award by his longtime friend and colleague, Jaci Holland.
